Listened to Monocle Weekly 113 on the train. Have some catching up to do. Recommended that week, was South Korean songwriter Shin Joong Hyun. They recommended him to me, and now I’m recommending him to you.
Like all things South Korean, it’s this interesting mash of American sensibilities with the realities of Korea. Kind of like if you put American country music, Korean folk singers, and British blue-eyed soul in a blender. Worth a listen, at the very least.
Shin Joong Hyun’s work is going to be released as an anthology in the west, as a CD called Beautiful Rivers and Mountains which is a very romantic way of thinking of South Korea.
